Are All Mini Splits Heat Pumps?

You’re glad you’ve found this blog, as you’ve had questions about ductless mini split systems for a while. While some of your questions have been answered by reading our posts, something that you’re still curious about is whether a ductless mini split system should be considered a heat pump.

The short answer to that question is that it depends on the mini split system! Some have cooling only capabilities and some include heat pump capabilities as well.

What Is a Heat Pump?

Since we’re sure you’re curious, let’s begin first by addressing what a heat pump even is. This device mostly provides warm air, hence the name heat pump, but some heat pumps can cool as well.

Warm air is produced by transferring the heat that is on the outside into the inside through the refrigerant.

Is a Mini Split a Heat Pump?

A ductless mini split system can indeed be a heat pump. Mini splits can provide cooling and heating depending on your needs. The way they do that is as follows.

The mini split adjusts the 4-way valve so that the condensation occurs in the indoor unit and not in the outdoor unit.  What this creates is that the condenser will work as the evaporator and will take the heat that remains in the outside and will take it in the refrigerant to the inside so that it can heat the inside of the house.

There’s no need for ductwork with a mini split system, which means fewer risks of air leaks that can lead to inconsistent output. If you’ve ever had your ducted air conditioner or furnace act up on you and not provide heating or cooling no matter which settings you’ve used, then you know what we’re talking about.

What Are the Advantages of a Ductless Mini Split Heat Pump?

You’re now seriously thinking about getting a ductless mini split heat pump installed in your home or commercial office. This is a great choice for a variety of reasons, including the following.

  • Money savings: Everyone likes to save money, yourself included. When you stop using out-of-date HVAC and switch to a ductless mini split heat pump, you’ll notice that your energy bills are now a lot lower month to month.
  • Energy savings: We all must do our part for the planet and using energy-sucking units like your old furnace and air conditioner are not energy-efficient. Mini split heat pumps make much better use of energy.
  • Lasts longer than HVAC: That heater or air conditioner of yours is only good for about a decade if that. Ductless mini split heat pumps can last upwards of 30 years with regular maintenance.
